34 galleriesVenice (Italian: Venezia [ve'n?ttsja]Venetian: Venexia [ve'n?sja]) is a city in northeast Italy sited on a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges. It is located in the marshy Venetian Lagoon which stretches along the shoreline between the mouths of the Po and the Piave Rivers. Venice is renowned for the beauty of its setting, its architecture and its artworks. The city and lagoon are listed as World Heritage Sites. Venice is the capital of the Veneto region. The name is derived from the ancient Veneti people who inhabited the region by the 10th century B.C. The city historically was the capital of the Venetian Republic. Venice has been known as the "La Dominante", "Serenissima", "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Masks", "City of Bridges", "The Floating City", and "City of Canals". Luigi Barzini described it in The New York Times as "undoubtedly the most beautiful city built by man". Venice has also been described by the Times Online as being one of Europe's most romantic cities. The Republic of Venice was a major maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and a staging area for the Crusades and the Battle of Lepanto, as well as a very important center of commerce (especially silk, grain, and spice) and art in the 13th century up to the end of the 17th century. This made Venice a wealthy city throughout most of its history. It is also known for its several important artistic movements, especially the Renaissance period. Venice has played an important role in the history of symphonic and operatic music, and it is the birthplace of Antonio Vivaldi.

20 imagesDespite still proudly known as La Serenissima, Venice on a typical day is anything but. Overtourism is killing Venice and one of main issues here. It was once a thriving city, home to a large and proud population of Venetians full of original and specialized, skilled artisans. Visited by actors, writers, painters and artists. Venice is now swamped by day trippers, who far outnumber overnight visitors and local residents. More than 30 million yearly visitors and some experts think the native population could drop to zero—that’s right, zero, as in nobody from Venice will actually live in Venice—by 2030. What’s driving them out? Inflated rents. The reasons behind over tourism in Venice many, and often the very same as in many other cities. The growth of low cost aviation, cruise ships and peer-to-peer home sharing platforms are all part of the problem. The rise of the day tripper is a huge problem, too. Of the more than 30 million people who come to Venice each year, one third sleep here.

25 imagesThe slaughtering of domestic pigs is both a common economic activity as well as a traditional feast in most European countries, today it divides people, many consider it brutal and unnecessary, but many more are faithful to tradition and still hold pig slaughter today, for sure it is a way to feed the family.
