Forte di S Andrea.The Forte di Sant' Andrea..Constructed in 1500 on the island of Certosa, designed by architect Michele Sanmichele, the Forte di Sant' Andrea guarded the main entrance to Venice from the Adriatic -- the Porto di Lido -- for nearly 300 years. It was from here, in April 1797, that the Venetians fired upon and seized the intruding French warship, Liberateur d'Italie, killing its commander, and giving Napoleon the pretext for declaring war in May 1797.
